Low Testosterone

Low testosterone is when a man produces less testosterone than what is medically normal; in most men, these levels decrease over time, so lower levels are commonly found in men aged 40 or older. As many as 13 million men have low testosterone and it is more common in men who are overweight, have diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. Low levels are also common in men with erectile dysfunction; while symptoms can be similar, the conditions are different.

Symptoms of low testosterone include:

  • Low sexual drive
  • Weaker and fewer erections
  • Reduced muscle mass
  • Increased body fat
  • Decrease in strength, endurance, or loss of height
  • Less strong erections
  • A decreased enjoyment of life

Treatments

Low levels of testosterone in the body can be supplemented by hormone replacements. Testosterone can be replaced via intramuscular injections, by placing a patch or gel on the skin, or as a putty applied to the gums of the mouth.
